The Director of Human Resources provides institutional leadership by creating and implementing human resource strategies that support the Museum’s overall goals while shaping a culture that reflects its values, mission, and vision. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for overall administration of human resource functions, including recruitment, onboarding, training and development, legal compliance and risk management, benefits administration, development of personnel policies and assessment tools, and employee recognition. Working with the Executive Director and Deputy Director, the Director of Human Resources plays a key role in organizational design and workforce planning.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and administers all departmental activities.
  • Demonstrates leadership in fostering an organizational culture that values innovation, promotes inclusion, team spirit, and inspires excellence in the workplace.
  • Drafts workplace policies, ensuring all policies are in accordance with current laws and best serve the needs of the Museum.
  • Maintains responsibility for compliance with federal, state, and local laws pertaining to all staffing and personnel matters.
  • Manages the Museum’s recruitment and on-boarding efforts, including job postings, interviews, selection, reference checks, and background checks, and coordinates/conducts orientation and other onboarding activities.
  • Prepares letters of employment and issues the employee handbook. Coordinates new hires with the Finance Department, Security, and IT.
  • Maintains employee personnel files and ensures that necessary documentation such as employment requisitions, job descriptions, enrollment forms, employee action forms, and the like are complete.
  • Maintains electronic files for staff titles, organizational chart, extension numbers, email addresses, emergency contact information, employment anniversaries, birthdays, etc.
  • Maintains the Museum’s Employee Handbook.
  • Drives staff performance management, including notifying Department Heads when employee performance appraisals are due, assisting managers in the drafting of performance appraisals, performance improvement plans, discipline notices, and coaching managers on conducting effective employee meetings.
  • Manages employee relations matters including one-on-one coaching with employees and supervisory staff, mediating dialogue between staff members, and other conflict resolution measures.
  • Manages the administration of all benefit plans; leads open enrollment process. Administers and explains benefits to employees, serves as liaison between employees and insurance carriers; establishes and maintains relationships with insurance companies, benefits and business systems providers.
  • Manages the initiation of workers’ compensation, LOA, FMLA, and benefit programs.
  • Assists the C.F.O. with development of the Human Resources budget and develops and manages the department operating budget.
  • Develops programs and activities to strengthen staff communications and morale.
  • Manages organization-wide training programs.
  • Organizes All-Staff meetings.
  • As a member of the Management Team, participates in Department Head and staff meetings.
  • Maintains excellent working knowledge of the Museum’s policies, procedures, educational practices, and ideologies.
  • Be knowledgeable of and practice the AAM Code of Ethics.
  • Monitors workplace protocols as necessary.
  • Performs other duties deemed appropriate by the Executive Director/Deputy Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree; PHR / SPHR certification is desirable.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive and broad responsibility in the human resources field is required. Prior experience in a cultural or entertainment attraction is desired.
  • Experience in the recruitment of both exempt and non-exempt staff, including part-time and seasonal employees, is required.
  • Supervisory experience is desired.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to engage individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • High competence with traditional office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe).
  • Enthusiasm for working in a developing organization where change is frequent, structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities.
  • Ability to work well with others and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling. Frequent repetitive motions.

Salary Range
$85,000 to $95,000 per year, depending on experience
