The Art of the Medici
June 4 @ 6:00 pm$200.00 – $220.00
This new course will be an exciting look at the art of Florence and the Italian Renaissance. Through the lens of the Medici family—among the greatest and most flamboyant art patrons of history— we will explore the painting, sculpture, and architecture of this decisive period. Geniuses such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Brunelleschi will be featured, with a focus on their lesser-known works. In addition, Renaissance artists who are more obscure, but whose work nevertheless
provides insight on their times, will also be included. And the course will tell the story of the Medici themselves. Sometimes called the “godfathers” of the Renaissance,
the family includes such colorful characters as Cosimo the patriarch and Lorenzo the Magnificent. The palace intrigue, assassination plots, and Machiavellian strategy that marked the lives of the Medici (and their enemies) in Florence and in Rome provides a dramatic and sometimes nefarious backdrop to the artistic masterpieces which the family commissioned.
