the VBMA’s exhibition Ancient Egypt & the Napoleonic Era: Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art with the stories behind the monuments in the paintings, along with insight into the ancient Egyptian civilization that has so fascinated artists. Gallery visits, combined with PowerPoint presentations, will explore the secrets of the pyramids, the tombs, and the treasures they contained; show how ancient paintings beautifully portrayed the rich flora and fauna of the Nile; and even show family life in ancient Egypt. Learn about the adventures behind the paintings, as artists explored Egypt during the nineteenth century and see how they followed in the wake of Napoleon Bonaparte and Horatio Nelson while trying to recreate the Egypt of ancient times in their art. CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS

CHAIR YOGA

Elise Mahovlich
All Levels
Students will enjoy an invigorating yoga practice with a slight modification – the chair is the ‘ground.’ Students will employ this everyday prop to take them through the range of motion for a full body workout that will include forward bends, backbends, and spinal twists for flexibility; standing and balancing poses to build stability and core strength; and breathing techniques for body awareness and stress reduction.

QIGONG

Katie Nall

Qigong is an 8,000-year-old movement program that exercises the body as a whole. With over 9,000 variations, it is the parent form for Tai Chi, Kung Fu, acupuncture, acupressure, and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping). Qigong is known as the Longevity Exercise. No special equipment required.

NEW! CREATIVE WRITING: DISCOVERING YOUR STORY

This supportive and interactive class concentrates on the techniques of writing creative nonfiction and fiction through the production of original works followed by discussion and analysis. Students along with the instructor will provide effective critiques, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement. In addition, students will work on creative exercises using specific techniques that will provide the foundation for stories and essays and learn how to transform observation and personal experience into imaginative prose, create dynamic characters and dialogue, and write from different points of view.

Stuart Segal Scholarship for Photography Students The Stuart Segal Scholarship is dedicated to aiding aspiring photography students for whom attending class would otherwise be financially challenging. PHOTOGRAPHY 101

Beginner Level
This fun and interactive class is designed to teach students the fundamentals of photography. Discover f/stops and shutter speeds and how to use them to take better photos. We’ll also discuss composition, color, perspective and imaginative approaches to photography to spark creativity! Students only need their cameras and notes.

THE CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHER

This course is designed to help students discover their creativity and personal vision through photography. We will explore the creative process through presentations, slides and videos. Each week students will be given a creative challenge to help them discover new ways of seeing. Technical skills will be introduced along the way to support creative ideas. CERAMICS

PLEASE NOTE: MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES FOR CERAMICS CLASSES
A 25-pound bag of clay is included in class tuition. Registered students may purchase up to two more bags of clay from the instructor during the duration of each course. Only clay provided by the Museum may be used in class or fired in the Museum’s kilns. All tools and materials are the responsibility of the students and are generally introduced through a supply list on the website under the class description, or during the term’s first class. WORKING WITH CLAY

Kent Johnson

Open to beginners through advanced students, this class includes both hand building and wheel throwing. Beginners learn the basics, while returning students work on perfecting their techniques. The instructor covers surface decoration, design, and glazing instruction, and will also employ helpful class critiques.

THROW LIKE A PRO

Kent Johnson

This class provides an intensive immersion in wheel-throwing for students of all skill levels. Beginners will learn shortcuts to successfully make pots on the wheel, while students with previous experience can grow their skills. Weekly demonstrations will cover basic forms such as cups and bowls and will move on to advanced forms such as tall vases and larger forms. Instruction on glazing techniques will round out the course, allowing students to finish pieces to take home and enjoy.

ADVANCED CERAMICS STUDIO

This studio course is geared to the student who is motivated to undertake ambitious individual work in clay and further their understanding of ceramic art. The goal is to provide the advanced student the opportunity to grow and to produce desired but previously unattainable work. FIGURE AND PORTRAIT SCULPTURE

Students will develop a proficiency in figurative and portrait sculpture. Working in water-based clay and from a live model, students will create two figures and one portrait. The instructor will introduce principles of anatomy, gesture, and proportion as well as the intricacies of the hands, feet and facial features. Proportional calipers will be utilized assist in developing accuracy.

Students will learn how to explore the medium of drawing in a loose, non-academic way, and to think outside the box. In this fun and lively journey of discovery, students will draw with a different medium each week with a variety of materials provided. Students are encouraged to bring an open mind and as they dive into approaches that may be new to them as they draw (wet and dry) from nature or from the figure, or art history or even their imaginations, which is the greatest frontier of all. MEDITATE AND CREATE: INNER VISION ENHANCEMENT FOR YOUR CREATIVITY

In this class, the instructor combines guided, creative visualization meditation to inspire and invoke inner images to surface. Participants will then journal their images, put them to paper with the medium of their choice, and afterwards have time to present and share with the class if they choose. Each class will start with a brief illustrated presentation, beginning with the history of still life painting. Inspired by the VBMA exhibition’s Ancient Egypt & the Napoleonic Era: Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art, one of the classes will include studying aspects of this exhibition as it relates to still life and then students will incorporate them into their own still life paintings. Plein air is the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Join other plein air artists to capture the spirit and essence of a landscape. PET PORTRAITS

Artists have painted portraits of their pets for centuries. Students have the opportunity to immortalize theirs with a painting or create a wonderful gift. HOW TO PAINT A LANDSCAPE

The class will look at European artists and how they formed compositions, specifically landscapes. The focus will be on the French Impressionists and understanding perspective and diminishing colors to create depth in a painting. Students can choose their own medium. PHOTO FUN!

Aspiring photographers will learn how to take better photos on their cell phones or digital cameras. The instructor will go over basic camera or cell phone settings along with varied artistic lessons such as color and composition, creative abstracts, portrait lighting, and basic editing with apps such as Photoshop and Snapseed. NEW! COASTAL MANDALA DECORATIVE BOWL

There are a few coastal stencils and a few mandala stencils to choose from. Students may bring their own stencils and tools if desired. Stencils should not be larger than 10 x 10 inches.

Aric Attas

Aric holds a B.S. in Psychology from Hobart College and an M.F.A. in Photography from the Hartford Art School. He has won numerous awards for his work which has been widely exhibited. As a two-time cancer survivor he thrives on sharing the healing power of creativity with others through art, music, creativity coaching, workshops and speaking engagements.

Sandy Bachmann

Sandy earned her Bachelor’s degree in advertising design at New York Institute of Technology. After 23 years working in graphic design, she moved to Florida and went back to school to receive a teaching degree in art. She has been teaching art for 17 years at the middle school and elementary school levels in Broward County and the past 6 years in Indian River County.

Lynn Berkowitz M.F.A., B.F.A.

Lynn, with a career in art museums and online learning, has developed an array of award-winning gallery tours, experiences, and apps aimed at helping audiences of all ages and abilities engage with a diversity of art ‘isms and approaches.

Judy Burgarella

Judy has taught painting and drawing for over 20 years, and her work has been exhibited in many museums, galleries, and shows, earning her numerous awards. She is an artist of many mediums, and she has studied with such notable artists as Christopher Chang, Dorothy Starbuck, Karen Lafell-Massengill, Lou Bonomarte, and Charles Gruppe.

Walford Campbell

Walford attended the Walsall School of Art and Derby Lonsdale College in England. He served as the head of Ceramics at Solden Hill House in England and taught at Edna Manley College in Kingston, Jamaica. Walford’s focus is on surface decoration and larger sculptural forms.

Monique Carr

Monique is a contemporary painter and instructor. After growing up in Montreal, Canada and spending 10 years in the Cayman Islands, Monique and her husband made East Tennessee home in 1999. Monique worked as a graphic artist for over 20 years prior to becoming a full-time fine artist. The style that emerges in Monique’s work bursts with energy as she combines expressive colors and intriguing textures.

Douglas David

Douglas has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves. After graduating with honors from Herron School of Art, Indiana University, Douglas went on to study for a number of years with Frank Mason, famed instructor from the Art Students League of New York and student of Frank Vincent DuMond and is a recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors.

Camy De Mario

Camy is a self-taught artist, children’s book author, illustrator and screenwriter. She has produced short animated movies, and has participated in several national and international film festivals, where she has received multiple awards. Camy has taught art classes both virtually and in person. Her own art uses bright colors which results in happy pieces with her favorite techniques of pointillism and doodling.

Chris Fasolino

Chris has an M.A. in art history and English literature from Plattsburgh State University. He has taught art history for more than 15 years, including courses for undergraduates and museum docents. His historical adventure novel, Men of Promise, was published in 2015. Chris’s new nonfiction book, Early Nature Artists in Florida – Audubon and His Fellow Explorers, is available from Arcadia Publishing.

Hank Feeley

Hank is an author, painter, and sculptor and has won multiple awards. He graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard Business School. He taught at Roosevelt University and the Dennos Museum and currently teaches at the Glen Arbor Arts Center and the Gifford Youth Achievement Center. His work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally.

Xaque Gruber

Xaque is an artist, writer, and filmmaker. He has taught art to people with Alzheimer’s and to cancer patients as they receive their chemotherapy at Florida’s first ever Arts & Cancer program in Vero Beach. In downtown Vero Beach, Florida, he manages Gallery Veritas & Art Library, the only library dedicated to art books on the Treasure Coast. He holds a B.F.A in Drawing from Pratt Institute, a M.A. in Teaching from Tufts University, and a M.S. in Television Production from Boston University.

Sherry Haaland

Sherry received her B.S. in art education from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She has extensive experience in both oils and pastels, having studied art and art history for many years. Sherry is a professional studio artist, receiving many commissions for pet portraits in pastels.

Gail Lois Jaffe

Gail is an artist, psychotherapist, Brennan Healing Science Practitioner, and longtime meditator. She has a private practice in Vero Beach, works as a professional artist, and is a public motivational facilitator and workshop facilitator. She combines decades of experience and training in psychology, energy healing, yoga, meditation, personal growth, and art, in a sophisticated and unique way to enhance healing and creativity.

Alan James

Alan is a highly respected, award-winning watercolor artist and teacher. His art graces the walls of many private and corporate collectors worldwide. Alan is the East Coast America host of the TV show Colour In Your Life, and currently teaches watercolors at his studio in Deep River, CT, Jerry’s Artarama, The North East Connecticut Art Guild, and at the historic Lyme Art Association. Beginning in August of 2022, Alan’s online School of Watercolor became operational offering four comprehensive courses.

Jeremiah Jenner

Jeremiah’s photography students appreciate his likeable and engaging character, teaching style, and his natural calling as a teacher. His minimalistic limited editions have endeared the media as well as the serious art collector. National collectors of his photographs include Starbucks, PBS, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has been a photography instructor for Broward County School since 2009 and has taught multiple workshops in the area.

Joel Johnson

Joel has a B.F.A. in art from Westminster College and M.F.A. in painting and art history from Utah State University. A career artist, Joel has received numerous awards, exhibited in many national shows and has been featured in many fine art galleries throughout the country. He is also an exhibiting artist at the Prix de West in Oklahoma City at the Cowboy Heritage Museum.

Kent Johnson

Kent began his career in pottery at a very young age. In 1978, he apprenticed with Brent Bennett of Architectural Stoneware in Los Angeles before studying Ceramics at Palomar College in San Diego and in addition completed a two-year professional potter training program. He became a juried member of Many Hands Art and Craft Collective and sold his ceramic pieces in galleries in the San Diego area.

Pearl Lau

Pearl graduated from Art & Design HS and was an art director in Manhattan for over 20 years. She also holds a B.A. and M.A. in Art Education from CUNY, NYC. Pearl has taught at Northeastern University and the NYC Dept of Education. She has won several grants to study the arts of Ancient China and Meso-American Mexico, including a Fulbright to India. Pearl has won numerous awards as an art director, art educator and as an artist.

Stephanie Lovallo

Stephanie is currently a professional painter and sculptor and is known for her large scale assemblages and paintings. She earned her B.F.A. from FAU, a M.S. from Nova SE University, and certification credits for Guidance and Counseling from Barry University Miami. She is a retired Broward County Schools art teacher, and a Broward Art Guild teacher and gallery participant. She is multi award winner and loves to create out of the box art.

Elise Mahovlich

Elise founded and operated Living Yoga studio in Vero Beach for 15 years. She is a certified Kripalu Yoga instructor with many thousands of hours of classroom teaching experience over 18 years. She is also certified to teach Prenatal Yoga and is a 3rd Degree Reiki Teaching Master.

Katie Nall, Ph.D.

Katie is a certified Qigong instructor through the Cloudwalker program in Vero Beach. She is also a mathematician, a two-time TEDx speaker, a professional member of National Speakers Association, an Accredited Master Trainer and Practitioner in Emotional Freedom Technique.

Vickie Marsango

Vickie is a professional abstract expressionist artist and instructor. She has studied with contemporary master artists at workshops and residencies, and has attended art courses at colleges and universities in California and Illinois. From her studio/gallery in Jensen Beach, Florida, she accommodates collections of her art for interior designers and gallery representation. Marsango is acclaimed for her unique perspective on abstract expressive drawing and painting techniques in conjunction with the creative process.

Marianne Mitchell

Marianne earned a B.F.A. in painting from Washington University in Saint Louis, with post-graduate work in Japan, China, and at the Vermont Studio Center. A Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Fellowship recipient, Marianne has shown her works nationally and hangs in many collections across the United States and abroad. Marianne is devoted to transforming lives through the presence and practice of art, and is the founder of Whole Artist Mastery.

Christine Parker

Christine is an artist and art instructor based in Satellite Beach, Florida. She holds a B.S. and a M.Ed. in Art from Mississippi College. She is from a three-generational military family and an arts liaison for her local veteran and civic communities. Parker has served over two decades in private and public school settings, museums, military bases and USOs. Her privately commissioned oil paintings hang in galleries and homes across the U.S. and Europe. She has been recognized and awarded internationally for artwork.

George Paxton

George received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University and has studied at the Corcoran School of Art and at numerous workshops with master sculptors. For several years he has taught figure and portrait sculpture and maintained a studio in Vero Beach. He is known for his life-like, representational figural sculpture, for which he has won numerous awards.

Marlene Evans Putnam

Marlene has taught classes and conducted numerous workshops around the country. She is known for her portraits as well as seascapes, has won many awards and continues to exhibit throughout the U.S. Mrs. Putnam’s work is included in many public and private collections.

Andee Reilly

Andee was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside and is the author of SATISFACTION and A CHRISTMAS LOVE SONG. Her two-decade academic career includes teaching writing and literature at the California State University, Channel Islands and at the University of Hawaii Maui College. Currently, she lives in Melbourne Beach and is working on her next novel.

Jack Reilly

Jack received his M.F.A. from Florida State University in 1978 and has since exhibited his paintings in numerous galleries and museums internationally. Recognized as an original artist of Abstract Illusionism, with reviews published in numerous periodicals and books, he has mounted over 50 solo exhibitions and countless group shows. Widely exhibited and collected, Reilly is a recipient of numerous awards.

Jane Robbins

Jane is a Rhode Island artist working and teaching exclusively in the vibrant, luminous medium of soft pastel. She is an elected Signature Member of Pastel Society of America and of Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod; elected Exhibiting Artist of Providence Art Club; and honoree in Pastel Journal ‘s 2023 and 2024 Pastel 100. Best-known for her coastal dunes, seascapes, and kitchen still lifes, her award-winning work is shown in national and international juried exhibitions.

Barry Shapiro

Barry is a graduate of Pratt Institute (BFA in painting and printmaking) where he studied with internationally renowned artists such as James Grashow, Vasilios Toulis, Rudolph Baranik, and Audrey Flack. His portraits and abstract landscapes have been featured in multiple exhibitions in the northeast and locally.

Paige Speight

Paige is a painter and muralist based out of Portland, Maine. She is a graduate of Bowdoin College, studied at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, and has exhibited in group and solo shows across the US. Her portraits are acclaimed.

Diane Thelen

Diane, who joined Film Studies in the fall of 2014, holds a Bachelor’s degree in English, with minors in art and French, from Douglass College. She also did post-graduate work in education at Rutgers University. A former Language Arts teacher, who has traveled abroad for many years, Diane combines a keen interest in film, together with a curiosity about people and cultures. She brings this appreciation of cinema to the class, to share its emotional power with all of Vero’s movie buffs.

Martha Westphal

Martha, an award winning artist, has studied with numerous professional artists including Daniel E. Green (oils), Frank Cavino (oils), Robert Vickery (egg tempera) and Syril Morss (marble sculpting). She has copied old world paintings in well known galleries and museums locally and internationally. Martha studied art at Springfield College and Art Association, Peoria Center for the Arts, Illinois Central College, and continued to expand her studies at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, and beyond. All registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In-person and phone-in registration is offered during regular Museum hours, weekdays 10 am – 4:30 pm.

Online and phone payment is by Visa/MasterCard/American Express/Discover.

Tuition

Tuition includes course fees, a model fee (per curriculum), and some materials. Ceramics class tuition includes the costs of glazes, firing, and one 25-pound bag of clay. Student materials list for your course or workshop(s) are available when registering at the Museum; online registrants will receive an e-mail with any material lists, or they may download them from the website.

Courses are canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. If a course is canceled, the Vero Beach Museum of Art makes every attempt to inform students and provide a full refund or offer a transfer to another course.

Guest Policy

We regret that we are unable to accommodate guests in any art studio, humanities, or film.

Materials

Tuition does not cover the cost of materials used for students’ own production unless stated otherwise. Recommended materials lists for each course or workshop(s) are available when registering at the Museum; online registrants will receive an e-mail with any material lists, or they may download them from the website.

Waiting Lists

Waiting lists are maintained for all filled classes. Please contact the Museum Art School office to be placed on the waiting list. No deposit is necessary to hold a space.

Refunds

Requests for refunds are made through the Museum Art School office during the drop/add week, January 8 – 12. Refunds after the Drop/Add week will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
