Summer 2021 Classes


This summer, VBMA Museum Art School students may choose to participate in onsite/in-person* and online courses.  Check out the classes below and see what is out there for you!

*All onsite/in-person classes will adhere to Museum safety protocols. We require masks for studio-based classes this summer due to the close proximity among students and the faculty.

ONSITE/IN-PERSON CLASSES

ACRYLIC PAINTING – THE BASICS AND MORE
Christine Thomas
All levels

Beginning or experienced students can improve skills in painting and brush and material handling. The instructor will discuss how to frame and hang paintings correctly as well as setting the pace for students to begin and complete a painting. Students may also bring artworks in progress and other ideas for painting. Materials needed: Thomas Acrylic Mats

PAINTING STUDIO AND MORE

All levels

Join a friendly group of artists who work independently while sharing with each other. The instructor provides suggestions and demonstrations. This studio class is open to these 2-D mediums: acrylics, oils, mixed media, watercolor, and drawing. Students should bring their preferred materials to class.

Beginner level

This course will ensure that beginning students learn to see shapes, understand shadows, and use lines in a powerful or delicate way. Students will learn to use drawing tools properly and confidently to design and compose projects. The instructor will teach by both lecture and studio demonstration. NEW! INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING PORTRAITS WITH COLORED PENCILS
Ed Cortez
Beginner level

This class will introduce students to the basics of colored pencil drawing, with an emphasis on the elements required to paint a portrait with colored pencils. Students will also learn how to look at and describe what they see in order to facilitate the drawing process. Each class will include a guided drawing session of a part of the face, such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. Materials needed: Colored Pencil Painting materials

PAINTING PORTRAITS WITH COLORED PENCIL 
Ed Cortez
Intermediate level

This class builds upon the basics of colored pencil painting to create a complete portrait. Students will explore painterly techniques using colored pencils and applied them to guided weekly exercises. The instructor will discuss the importance of tone, value, and line as they are created with colored pencil. The last two classes will be dedicated to drawing a portrait of the student’s choice, with the instructor’s guidance. Introduction to Painting Portraits with Colored Pencils is a prerequisite. NEW! SEEING STORIES IN ART: REMBRANDT, PICASSO, BEARDEN

All levels

Learn new strategies for uncovering the stories that art reveals through weekly themes such as: considering beauty, narratives within, genre scenes, space, and lighting the setting. Through the lens of diverse artists and isms, you will explore paintings of Manet, Renoir, Pippin, Mitchell, Saar, and more in a decidedly different way. This art appreciation class is a blended lecture and conversational format with multi-media where student insights contribute to learning for all.

Learn new strategies for uncovering the artful nature of meaning through weekly themes that introduce iconography and symbols, the impact of color, nature, unity throughout, and balance within. Through the lens of exciting prompts, you will explore paintings of Van Gogh, Kahlo, Turner, Gilliam, and more in a decidedly different way. This course is a blended lecture and conversational format with multi-media, where student insights contribute to the learning for all.

Take a trip through history while exploring depictions of women from prehistoric to present day. In this discussion-based course, we will explore who makes these artworks, what they communicate about the status of women, and, ultimately, how some women artists choose to represent themselves.
