VBMA TUESDAY’S FLICK PICK
June 16
Headhunters (2011) Drama, thriller. Norwegian with English subtitles. Based on the novel by the popular Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbø, Headhunters follows Roger Brown, a man at the peak of his profession. His earnings are not enough to support his indulgent lifestyle, however, so he steals valuable works of art as a hobby. After a job goes awry, his untouchable status is threatened and his deceitful private life revealed. Directed by Moten Tydlum, the film draws its strengths from being able to produce old-fashioned thrills and spills without the use of special effects.

Image credit: Leon Applebaum. Untitled, date unknown. Blown and constructed glass
The precarious juggling act performed by main character Roger Brown recalls Untitled glass sculpture by Leon Applebaum. Brown creates a life of façade and deception that comes crumbling down in a way that seems to echo the perilous stacking of triangle, circle and rectangles in Applebaum’s inherently fragile glass sculpture.
