NOTE: In response to the rapidly rising COVID-19 delta variant cases in Indian River County, and the recent local state of emergency issued, Museum Art School classes for the fall will no longer be in-person but instead be offered in an online format. Drawing

NEW! CHALLENGING REALISM WITH COLORED PENCIL
Ed Cortez
All levels

This class will help all level students learn the basics of hyperrealism drawing techniques using colored pencils. Students will master the art of observation as they learn to notice the subtle properties of lights and colors on any given object to create a drawing resembling a photograph. Step-by-step guidance and demonstration will boost students’ confidence in using colored pencils as a drawing tool. The instructor will teach by both lecture and studio demonstration. Materials needed: Cortez Challenging Realism materials

Art Appreciation/Art History

THE ARTIST’S GAZE

Join the conversation that explores the ‘what’ artists are looking at and the ‘how’ viewers perceive them. Weekly themes covered: animals in art, artist families, friends, reflections of all kinds. Through the lens of diverse artists and “isms,” students will examine paintings of Henri Matisse, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Marisol, and more in a decidedly different way.

ARTISTS AND THEIR MEDIA: FROM PAINTS TO COLLAGE

Take a deep look at art from different times/places to really see the impact of the media that the artists use. Weekly themes introduce encaustic and fresco, tempera and oil, watercolor and gouache, synthetic, and collage. Through the lens of exciting prompts, you will explore paintings by Diego Rivera, Winslow Homer, Alice Neel, Helen Frankenthaler, Andrew Wyeth, and others.

THE ETERNAL CITY: ART HISTORY OF ROME

The art history of Rome—ancient, Renaissance, and Baroque—will be explored. From the palaces of the Caesars to the masterpieces of Michelangelo, this is a unique look at art of the colorful and flamboyant Eternal City.

Watercolor

In this course, students will learn techniques that they will use throughout the course, explore everything from traditional landscapes to abstraction, and look to the Museum’s permanent collection for inspiration as well as fun and unexpected challenges.
