ART HISTORY: CHINESE ART HISTORY
March 18 @ 9:30 am$200 – $220
CHINESE ART HISTORY
A journey through the history of Chinese art, beginning with the amazing terra cotta army of ancient Xi’an. Chinese landscape painting, with its vast and mysterious mountain vistas, will be explored, along with the complementary tradition of bird-and-flower painting, which focuses on the close observation of the beauty of nature and conveys the brilliant colors of petals and plumage. The unique art form of Chinese calligraphy, which since ancient times was compared to “a bird on the wing,” will be given in-depth consideration; we will see how calligraphy can express the personality and emotion of the artist with each brush stroke. The great palaces of the Forbidden City and other highlights of architecture will be included. The course will conclude with the astonishing wood and ivory miniatures of the nineteenth century – works of art that are best viewed with a magnifying glass!
