The Museum Art School continues its mission of providing the most exceptional studio art and humanities learning experiences for children and adults. This fall’s schedule features a selection of Art History, Textile Arts, Museum Learning Strategies, Photography (adults and children), Drawing, Women in the Arts Studies, Painting, and Mixed Media. All courses will be presented via Zoom. To enroll in any of these classes, you must register for this site (your old logins will not work).

FA02 – A Natural History of Art: Animals in Painting and Sculpture
This course offers a unique look at animals in art history. We will begin with the ancient world, from the silver owls of Athens to Rome’s imperial eagles. The fantastic imagery of medieval illuminated manuscripts will be covered and the scientific perspectives of the Renaissance—including Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of the flight of birds. The stone elephants and jade crickets of Indian and Chinese sculpture will be included, as will the colorful birds of Chinese and Japanese painting. The art of the European Age of Exploration, with its sense of scientific discovery, will be a significant part of the course; this will include a look at extinct species such as the dodo, which have been preserved in art. The course concludes with the work of John James Audubon, including his images of our familiar and beautiful Florida birds.

FA03 New Class! The Grand Tour: The Art History of Great Cities

This new course is designed to feature a different city each week. Like travelers on the Grand Tour, we will explore the art and architecture of some of the great cities of the world! The course includes palaces, temples, castles, cathedrals, and other iconic monuments, as well as masterpieces of painting and sculpture associated with these cities and their museums. Here is our itinerary:

FA12 NEW CLASS! The Art History of Food and Wine

This new course is perfect for foodies and wine enthusiasts, as well as art lovers! It will look at how images of food and wine have become part of art history. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and ceramics portrayed banquet scenes—a theme that continued to be popular in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance paintings. We will also learn about artists who enjoyed wine and how this reflected their cultures. Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo may have been rivals, but they both enjoyed Tuscan wines. Claude Monet was a gourmet who enjoyed fine food and vintage wines at Giverny. The British masters enjoyed port and sherry wines for reasons interwoven with English history.

Learn to use your DSLR camera on manual. In this class, you will learn the basics of photography, including but not limited to, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and ISO. We will talk about how these things impact your images and how to use them to get the photographs you want.

Ramp up your online presence with savvy content by learning how to shoot, enhance, and share photographs with your cell phone camera. In this class, the instructor will share tips and tricks for getting the best photographs, lighting, composition, and apps to enhance and showcase your photos online. Working from photographs supplied to each student by the instructor, this course is designed for beginners to learn beautiful oil painting, from drawing the subject onto the canvas to color mixing and brushwork. All classes will focus on value, the difference between opaque and transparent colors, and the differences between colors in light and shadow. Students will also learn how to clean and care for tools properly to last for a lifetime.

This class is for the novice as well as the seasoned painter. This class is open to all 2-D media, including acrylic, oil, watercolor, mixed media, and drawing. We will explore color, color mixing, layering, brush handling, composition, and the importance of light.
