Theis Ships and Shorelines is a thematic exhibition which explores the tradition of marine painting during its golden age in America during the mid-nineteenth century. The exhibition looks at the development of the genre against the backdrop of America's burgeoning maritime economy and industry. Approximately 30 works by artists including William Bradford, A.T. Bricher, and Fitz Henry Lane will be showcased. The works reveal the evolution of nineteenth-century marine painting as it embraced not only ship portraiture, harbor scenes, and storm scenes, but also the depiction of the romantic sensibilities of light, mood, and atmosphere.
